The Flag and The Albatross is the story of the last eight months in the life of the USS Regulus (AF-57), a life ended by Typhoon Rose in Hong Kong. It begins with the ship getting a new, possibly unqualified captain, and two minor events which some superstitious in the crew think portend a dark future. In the following months, the Regulus provides exemplary services to the ships operating off the coast of Vietnam in support of the war. By pure chance it also just misses encounters with two typhoons; lucky, yes, but the captain becomes complacent. As the Regulus nears the end of its six-month deployment, it is scheduled for an R & R visit to Hong Kong. Unfortunately, Typhoon Rose also plans to make a visit there at the same time. The initial storm tracks show Rose missing the city, but as time passes, the track keeps changing and the threat increases. Finally, it is clear that Rose will hit Hong Kong, but the captain refuses all recommendations to evacuate and the ship remains at anchor. On the night of August 21, 1971 Typhoon Rose slams into Hong Kong – one of the strongest storms ever to hit the city. Her eye passes directly over the Regulus, and 160 mph winds and 40 foot seas wreck the ship on an uninhabited island. The Flag and The Albatross tells the story of the months leading up to the shipwreck, events during the storm’s encounter with the city and the ship, and what happens thereafter. The author was the Executive Officer (second in command) during this period.

"Battered by waves forty-five feet high and winds over 160 miles per hour, will the ship and its crew survive?" One of the key lines in Arnold Marsh's unbelievably accurate book of the final year and days of a great US Navy Ship, the USS Regulus. How do I know? Because I was one of the crew members. I was on board for the final two years of its life. Reading Mr. Marsh's book, I relived every moment onboard and every moment of the final days and hours of this great ship that was a big part of my life. For years I always thought I remembered things about ship board life on the Reggie and those harrowing hours in Hong Kong. And his book confirms that my memory has not failed me and those things really all did happen. All that he writes about, that I was involved with, did in fact happen as he wrote it. Plus, it was great reading the many things I was not aware of, that occured on those days leading up to Typhoon Rose, the moments on the Bridge and Mr. Marsh's take charge attitude and moves that clearly saved lives.

You don't have to be a crew member to get in to this book. You will read how a great crew worked night and day off the coast of Vietnam replenishing our fighting fleet. How a crew was always together as it partied hard. Initiations, comraderie and most of all, a will to survive. The 200 some mem that came together in horrible conditions to try to save a ship and save the lives of their crewmembers and friends.

I lived it and remember those days vividly and now Mr. Marsh has burned those memories further in to my brain so I will never forget some great years of my life, of my time on board and the friends who I worked side by side with each and every day.

Mr. Marsh, I salute you. Outstanding job on the book and outstanding job as XO of the USS Regulus. The Reggie Maru!

Could have been a great novel instead its bogged down with incedential facts. More character development is needed.
Commander Marsh did a wonderful, accurate job recounting this sad, traumatic event. I was the Diving Officer in the ARS Safeguard and did a lot of the diving to map out the damage, locate the anchor chain and strategize options.
Arnie, I would like to share my memories of those days with you. My email jvbrady@verizon.net.
Good book
I enjoyed reading the book. It was about the ship my husband spent 3 years on, although he wasn't on when it went on the rocks.
Commander

I was a crew member until August 1970 and know what you mean about the cohesiveness of that crew.

I knew a little about the grounding and always wanted to know more.

Thank you. You kept me up all night reading. I knew a lot of the men you wrote about.

Almost wish I could have been there to help.

Thank you again.

My father was aboard this ship when it went aground so it was really neat to read about it first hand. According to him this is a very accurate depiction of what happened. Even if you don't have direct ties to the ship or the events, it's an easy and entertaining read.
This book had me reflecting upon times spent in the navy, in ships in stormy seas. The Captain failed to mentor his Exec, or to learn from his subordinate's experience, and arrogantly insulated himself from those who would otherwise have buoyed him when he needed help the most. The Captain's nonchalant behavior in Hong Kong harbor had me shouting "Do something!"with each turn of the page. Having put his crew, ship, and himself in a corner against a raging typhoon, all he has left to rely upon are his seamanship skills and common sense. He is shallow in both regards.

Not quite The Caine Mutiny, but more fascinating given that this is a true story! The Flag and the Albatross is an engaging story for anyone who has served aboard ship, or who wants to get an idea of the tremendous power of the sea and leadership.
