A Different Kind of Veterinarian edition by Jack Stephens Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

I'm the resident veterinarian on The Dr. Oz show, and when I started the show five years ago he started introducing me as "America's Veterinarian." Having been a practicing veterinarian for 35-years and somewhat of a celebrity vet, I have had thousands of pet lovers tell me over the years 'I always wanted to be a veterinarian." If you had or still have that dream, I highly encourage you to read, "A Different Kind of Veterinarian." I've written 24 books and have hundreds of other great pet books on my sagging book shelves, but none go as deep into how the human-animal Bond is an irrefutable, inexhaustible source of energy to fuel the fight to get into vet school, create the pet insurance industry and fight a life-and-death battle. I know Jack and I knew Skeeter. This is a book that will educate, inspire and delight any pet lover.
This is a great book about a veterinarian who truly cared enough to put his life and career on the line and a glimpse into the thinking of companion animal vets. As a practicing veterinarian for 43 years, this book speaks my language and all other veterinarians who have been in the "trenches" of small animal practice". Dr. Jack Stephens is an unique individual, to say the least. He was brave enough to go out on a limb over 30 years ago to create the first pet insurance to save animal lives. We've all been there and seen the problem of "economic euthanasia" when a client puts down a pet that is treatable, just because they can't or won't spend the necessary money for diagnostics and treatment. Like Jack says, we can only do so much free work to save these lives. Thank you, Jack Stephens for making such a huge difference in the lives of our patients. We all saw the need but you actually did something about it. All pet owners should read this book. Not only to learn how much veterinarians truly love your pets and want to help you but to appreciate the courage of one individual who went to "hell and back" with his cancer treatments and still pursued his dream of making veterinary care affordable to all clients and pets. We all know what a difference you made, Jack, I hope you appreciate yourself for the sacrifices you've made. You and Vicki are a great team and I'm honored to know you.
Jack Stephens writes from the inside of his soul to the outside of the universe in this incredible voyage through his life that will keep you reading from the first chapter to the end because you will want to know more and more as you discover all about his journey. Without saying another word about the details, I will say that I think everyone should read this well written and compelling book for one reason. The reason is that it will open your eyes to the human spirit which will make you challenge yourself to do more, ask more questions and never quit. I'm blessed beyond words to know Jack Stephens and to have held his precious dog Torrey in my arms. I highly recommend "A Different Kind of Veterinarian" for anyone who breaths, loves animals, or just wants to expand their capacity for knowledge. Jack Stephens is a hero to pets and to people.
I have to start out by admitting that Jack and Vicki are good friends of ours and so I thought I knew Jack pretty well but after reading his book it helped me to better understand more about him and what they have been through from the cancer scare to his utmost compassion for animals and why he became a Veterinarian because of that compassion.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very hard for me to set it down as I just could not wait to get to his next story. I am a huge dog lover and I particular enjoyed reading about his very close relationships with his special dogs throughout his life.

Also, I am glad to say that now hearing this directly from a Veterinarian, that dogs can read/sense human emotions and feelings good or bad. I have always felt that as I have had similar experiences with my dogs.

In a nut shell...this book leaves one feeling warm on the inside.
Jack transparently shares his road to becoming “a different kind of veterinarian.” Since I am a veterinarian, I thought the title was intriguing. He left private practice to champion the cause of pet insurance starting the first successful pet insurance company in the U.S. He has since started a second company and has sought to set standards for the industry by encouraging the participation of all pet insurance companies in the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA). Veterinarians and pet owners owe Dr. Stephens a huge debt of gratitude for his vision and perseverance in paving the way for pets to receive the care they need when an unexpected accident or illness strikes.

This book, however, isn’t primarily about pet insurance. As I read the book, it became apparent that the title could have another possible meaning. His attitudes and opinions about the role that pets play in our lives changed significantly as he experienced first-hand the benefits of the human-animal bond when dealing with Stage 4 throat cancer. He and his wife started the Skeeter Foundation (named after his miniature pincher) that provides therapy pets that visit hospitals, nursing homes, etc. His message is “prescribe pets, not pills.”

Jack gives credit to a friend, a veterinary oncologist, who suggested a treatment for his cancer that not only saved his life, but gave him a much better quality of life afterwards than the treatment that was suggested by his own doctors. His relationship with family and friends as well as a couple of “sissy” dogs they adopted played a huge role in his perseverance through cancer treatment and the fight to make his dream of pet insurance a reality.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this book for all veterinarians, anybody who works at a veterinary hospital or animal shelter and everyone who owns a pet! You’ll find inspiration to live your life to the max and treasure the relationship you have with your pets as you never have before.
